IV hydration therapy does not require a lot of preparation, but there are several things to keep in mind to maximize the benefits of your IV therapy and have the best experience possible. Here are 5 tips to prepare for IV hydration.

  1. Hydrate

It may seem counterintuitive to hydrate before your IV hydration appointment, but in fact, it is very important to do so! When the body is dehydrated, our veins begin to constrict. This means the veins in your arms will be smaller if you’re not properly hydrated, and can more easily hide, making it more difficult to place an IV.  When we are hydrated, our veins are dilated, making it easier to place an IV. It is also helpful to be hydrated in advance to assist in the body’s absorption of the vitamins and minerals you will be receiving during IV therapy.

  1. Eat

It is highly recommended to eat prior to your IV hydration appointment—of course, so you won’t be hungry during your session, but also to keep your blood sugar stable throughout IV therapy. Some vitamins and minerals can also cause nausea when infused on an empty stomach, so having even a small snack such as a granola bar will be beneficial.

  1. Avoid Vasoconstriction Medications

Vasoconstriction medications constrict the smooth muscle in blood vessels, which causes the vessels to constrict. These types of drugs tighten blood vessels and increase blood pressure. Vasoconstriction medications include some decongestants and cough and cold medicines, such as Sudafed PE. Because these medications constrict blood vessels, it can make it more difficult to insert the IV when taking these. Of course, as vasoconstriction medications can include blood pressure medications and other prescriptions, we understand completely that some medications must be taken. If you cannot avoid taking these medications, just be sure to stay extra hydrated before your IV therapy appointment.

  1. Wear Comfortable Clothing

We want you to have the most comfortable experience possible, and there is no need to dress up for your IV therapy appointment! Sessions can last from a half hour to several hours, so wear an outfit you can relax in. We recommend a short sleeve shirt, or one in which you can roll up the sleeves above your elbows for the IV insertion. If you have a tendency to get cold, consider bringing an extra layer of clothing.

  1. Bring Entertainment

During your session, we want you to kick back and relax. Feel free to bring magazines, a book, or music and headphones to enjoy while you receive one of our IV therapy treatments. This is your time— enjoy!
